President's Invitation
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the 33rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of
Andrology to be held at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, New Mexico from April 12 - 15, 2008.
Co-chairs, Gail Cornwall and Paul Turek, and their program committee have arranged an
exciting program based on the theme of "Emerging Concepts and Technologies in Andrology".
Preceding the start of the main scientific meeting will be the full-day "Sperm Morphology
Workshop: A Hands-On Workshop" and the half-day ASA Special Symposium "Therapeutic
Strategies for Male Sexual and Hormonal Health" to be held on April 12.
The ASA Annual Meeting will open on Saturday evening with the ASA Lecture on "Stem
Cells, Small mRNAs and Self-Renewal in the Germline", presented by Haifan Lin. Plan to arrive in Albuquerque on
Saturday to take part in the pre-meeting symposium and workshop, followed by evening activities that include the
opening state-of-the-art lecture, an update on "what's happening" at NIH and mingle with colleagues during the Welcome
Reception.
Other featured lectures during the Annual Meeting include the AUA Lecture on "Amniotic Cells as Stem Cell Source for
Tissue Engineering" to be presented by Tony Atala; the Women in Andrology Lecture entitled "Risks of ADHD and
Autism in ART Offspring" presented by Mary Croughan; the International Lecture on "A Modern View of the Sperm
Acrosome Reaction" presented by Claudia Tomes; and lectures on "Understanding the Basics of Male Infertility Using
Proteomics in C. Elegans" by Diana Chu and "The Developmental Origin of Heath and Disease" by Kevin Sinclair.
Armand Zini and Mark Sigman will defend the pros and cons respectively of the question "Is the Detection of Sperm
DNA Damage Clinically Useful?" in a debate forum.
The interests of all attendees will be satisfied by one or more of five different symposia that address the topics of
"Spermatogonial Stem Cells", "Epigenetics and Imprinting", "Male Reprodutive Tract", "Novel Concepts in Prostate
Cancer" and "Environmental Insults and Reproduction." Throughout the
meeting, participants will have opportunities to visit the exhibitors and to attend
oral abstract and poster presentations to discuss findings with their authors,
many of whom are the trainees that represent the future of andrology.
Additional opportunities for interaction include the Women in Andrology
luncheon, the Laboratory Science Forum luncheon, the Trainee Forum and Mixer
at which trainee travel awards will be presented, and the mentoring luncheon
sponsored jointly by the Diversity and Trainee Affairs Committees. Learn about
and participate in what is going on in your society, as well as honor the Outstanding
Trainee Investigator and Trainee Award recipients, by attending the
ASA Business Meeting. During the meeting, we will also honor members of our society who are receiving the Archives
and History, Young Andrologist, Distinguished Service and Distinguished Andrologist Awards.
Wayne Kuang, our local contact in Albuquerque, has arranged an off-site southwestern-style celebration for our annual
banquet on the evening of Monday, April 14 - don't forget your dancin' shoes!
Bring your colleagues and trainees for four days of science and camaraderie and enjoy the sun, natural beauty and
history of the southwest at our 2008 meeting in Albuquerque!
